Tbilisi to Kazbegi by Marshrutka: The Budget Day Trip Guide

The single most-asked question at our reception desk: "How do I get to Kazbegi?" The postcard everyone wants — Gergeti Trinity Church against Mount Kazbek — is absolutely doable as a day trip from Tbilisi on a backpacker budget. Here is exactly how, starting from our front door in Avlabari.

Step 1: Get to Didube Station

Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) to Kazbegi leave from Didube station. From the hostel, walk to Avlabari metro and ride the red line direct to Didube — no line changes, about 15 minutes. Follow the crowd through the market chaos toward the minibus yard and ask anyone "Kazbegi?"; drivers will point you the right way. Aim to be there by 8–9am to make the most of the day.

Step 2: The Marshrutka Ride

Expect to pay in the region of 15–20 GEL each way, cash, paid to the driver. Vans leave when full — usually every hour or so in the morning. The ride up the Georgian Military Highway takes about three hours and is half the attraction: the Zhinvali reservoir's improbably turquoise water, the Ananuri fortress, and the switchbacks past the Gudauri ski resort. Sit on the left side going up for the best views, and keep in mind the marshrutka does not stop for photos — that is the trade-off for the price.

Marshrutka vs. Organized Tour

If you want to actually stop at Ananuri, the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument viewpoint and a couple of panoramas, a group day tour is the better buy — they run daily from Tbilisi at prices that are still very backpacker-friendly, and we can point you to the operators our guests liked. If your goal is simply Kazbegi itself and maximum budget efficiency, take the marshrutka.

Step 3: Up to Gergeti Trinity Church

From Stepantsminda (the town everyone still calls Kazbegi), the church sits 400 vertical meters above you. Hiking up takes roughly 1.5–2 hours on a clear trail — bring water and layers, mountain weather turns fast. The lazy option: shared 4x4 taxis wait on the main square and run tourists up and back for a negotiable per-car price; split between four people it costs little. Do the math against your legs' opinion.

Getting Back (Don't Miss the Last Van)

Marshrutkas back to Tbilisi run until early evening — ask your driver on arrival what the realistic last departure is and treat it seriously, because options after it are an expensive private taxi or an unplanned night in the mountains. Honestly though? If your schedule allows, staying one night in Stepantsminda for the sunrise on Mount Kazbek is the best upgrade in Georgia.
